Garmin’s new nuvi model 1490LMT has a big, easy-to-read 5-inch screen that shows turn-by-turn directions, visual representations of junctions, and comes with lifetime updates for traffic and maps. The Junction View feature is very useful, it knows which lane you’re in and which one you’re supposed to be in to connect to the road you need to get to. The lane assist feature is available in certain cities throughout the United States. The display shows you your current speed, the posted speed limit, and if you’re following its directions, your estimated time of arrival.

Part of the software includes ecoRoute to help you take the most fuel-efficient route and even tracks fuel usage and more. Paired with the ecoRoute HD cable (not included), you can take that a step further and see all kinds of information about your car and how you’re driving. It talks to you so you don’t have to look at the screen while driving. Since these portable units are great for travel, they work great for times when you fly somewhere and need GPS to help you find your way around in a rental car. There’s a “Where Am I?” emergency locator, so if you find yourself in an unfamiliar place in need of help, you can easily advise others of your whereabouts. It can show you the closest hospital, police station or even gas station.

The interface is very intuitive and easy to use, and it also has built-in Bluetooth for hands-free calling. North American maps are included, and maps are available for Europe as well, for as little as $10.
