You might have heard about the massive riots that broke out in London after what some consider to be an unjust death at the hands of UK policemen. What you may not have heard about, however, were the mobile advertising vans that have been driving all over town displaying digital images of rioting suspects.
This is all part of the police’s “Shop a Looter” plan, which is seeking information from the public on the identities and whereabouts of riot suspects. Those who are positively identified and convicted will have their names, dates of birth, partial addresses and the nature of their crimes broadcast over Twitter.
So there you have it: digital photos, digital projections and social media – three of today’s biggest technologies – are aiding and abetting the law.
