As you might know, May happens to be National Correct Posture Month, so it only seems appropriate that Eldergadget provide seniors with ways to help improve their posture.  You should also see the month of May as an opportunity to educate yourself about osteoporosis. To prevent this all-too-common condition Eldergadget has compiled a list of gadgets that can improve posture, including the Perfectore, the PosturePump and the Robot Leg.

The term osteoporosis means porous bone. It is a disease that is characterized by progressive bone loss and an increased risk of fractures.  The disease often develops unnoticed over many years, with no symptoms or discomfort until a fracture occurs. Osteoporosis can lead to a loss of height and hyperkyphosis, which is also known as “dowager’s hump.”

The Perfectore is a wearable elastic stretching device that lifts your posture into the proper position. The elastic resistance has the same strength as a human muscle, and the motion will engage small stabilization muscles, building strength around your new-found posture.

When the spine has lost its curved shape, the discs have been compressed and lubricating fluid is unable to penetrate. This causes premature aging as joints stiffen and dry up. When the spine is properly curved, nutrient-rich fluid is drawn into the discs, promoting spinal balance and joint lubrication. To address such a concern, the Posture Pump was invented by a doctor with more than 25 years of experience in neck pain, back pain and stiffness.

Oki Turns Robot Leg into Office Chair

Oki Electric Industry Co and Okamura Corp developed the Leopard, a concept model of an office chair that employs robot technologies to create a leg-shaped robot. The thigh area of the Leopard corresponds to the seating surface of a chair. The seating surface tilts forward when the chair is empty, improving posture and providing terrific support for seniors’ backs.

Doctors believe that regular exercises can reduce the effects of osteoporosis. For example, research shows that women who walk one mile a day have four to seven more years of bone reserves than those who don’t walk.

There are additional exercises that can help minimize the effects of osteoporosis, including jogging, riding a stationary bike and strength-training.
