Keeping our brains sharp well into our senior years is an age-old concern. Research shows that a host of factors that may contribute to a sharper mind late in life, including exercise, education, quitting smoking and social activity. Other studies also show that genetics play a role in who develops dementia. The study tested the cognitive abilities of 2,500 people aged 70 to 79 over an eight-year period. The researchers then looked to see what could account for any discrepancies.
Part 1: Exercise
There are different types of exercises, such as increasing stamina,staying fit in water, strengthening up, and becoming more flexible, that will help you sharpen your mind. Remember, however, a check-up is always recommended before starting any new exercise program. If you have recently had surgery or any serious illness that could affect your endurance or balance you should get clearance from your physician. Your physician can additionally provide you with guidelines for your exercise routine, including target heart rates and warning signs that can let you know you have overdone it.
