Gadgets For Sharp Elderly Minds; Part 1: Exercise Gadgets

Keeping our brains sharp well into our senior years is an age-old concern. Research shows that a host of factors that may contribute to a sharper mind late in life, including exercise, education, quitting smoking and social activity. Other studies also show that genetics play a role in who develops dementia. The study tested the cognitive abilities of 2,500 people aged 70 to 79 over an eight-year period. The researchers then looked to see what could account for any discrepancies.

Part 1: Exercise

There are different types of exercises, such as increasing stamina, staying fit in waterstrengthening up, and becoming more flexible, that will help you sharpen your mind. Remember, however, a check-up is always recommended before starting any new exercise program. If you have recently had surgery or any serious illness that could affect your endurance or balance you should get clearance from your physician. Any open or draining wounds from surgery may also delay the start of such a program. Your physician can additionally provide you with guidelines for your exercise routine, including target heart rates and warning signs that can let you know you have overdone it.

Increase Stamina

The Dream would be a great bicycle for anyone, the low step-through frame is a perfect for those who might not feel comfortable with a standard bicycle. A patented ergonomic seat and backrest provide lumbar support, while the high handlebar design reduces the stress on hands and wrists.

Schwinn® Airdyne® Exercise Bike

POLAR F4F Heart Rate Monitor

The POLAR F4F Heart Rate Monitor gives you instantaneous information on your heart rate and calories burned, thereby motivating you to reach your targets. The up-to-the-second readings also allow monitor wearers to increase, maintain or reduce the intensity of their workouts based on the monitor’s data.

T7 LCG (TaylorMade R7 CGB Max™ style) Hybrid Golf Clubs

The new T7 LCG hybrids are designed similarly to the new TaylorMade R7 CGB Max™ hybrid golf clubs. These larger-than-normal hybrids are designed with three replaceable weights. This allows the user to add or remove weight in an attempt to hit the ball higher or lower. These triangularly designed hybrids produce longer, straighter shots from all lies and all levels of play. Their smooth swings also reduce the risks of overextending one’s head or neck when following through on a shot.

You may not win any long-drive contests in the near future with these hybrid clubs, but with three woods and four hybrids you should hit more fairways and greens. And if your ball lands in the rough, your hybrids will give you a chance to advance it close to the green. These clubs also have a slower swing speed, so there’s less of a yardage gap between clubs — more like seven yards versus 10 — cutting down on the need for so many golf clubs. Seniors will also appreciate the lighter bag.

Exercising in the water can be great for increasing one’s metabolism, building muscle strength, improving balance and range of motion, and relieving tension and stress. Because water exercising is so adaptable, it can be adjusted to meet any individual’s abilities.
