Voracious online shoppers have long taken advantage of Amazon’s premium membership, Amazon Prime, because it offers free two-day shipping for an annual fee of $79. Now, in an attempt to compete with Netflix, Hulu Plus and even RedBox, Amazon is offering instant movie streaming to its Amazon Prime customers…for free.
Amazon Prime members will have about 5,000 movies and TV shows at their disposal, which can be watched instantly on computers, smartphones, tablets, set-top boxes and some Blu-Ray players. Compared to Netflix or RedBox, Amazon Prime’s selection is fairly limited. Most of its selection also consists of older titles, which may be a perk for seniors.
While Amazon has already partnered with Warner Bros. and Sony to deliver instant movies, it still has a ways to go before posing any real threat to Netflix. The foundation has been laid, however, and Amazon has made it clear that it’s in talks with the other major studios as well.
Seniors who share a love for online shopping and for old movies and TV shows may want to consider Amazon Prime.
